Cultural Exchange

Traditional festivals, community events, and Vietnam–Japan cultural exchange

Overview

One of VAJ's founding missions is to preserve and promote Vietnamese cultural identity in Japan. Each year, VAJ hosts major cultural events for the community and partners with Japanese organizations on Vietnam–Japan exchange occasions.

Hùng Vương Festival

The Hùng Vương Festival is a traditional cultural event that VAJ hosts every year, bringing together Vietnamese compatriots and Japanese guests. Recent editions include 2021, 2022, and 2023, combining a traditional ceremony with a community gathering.

The festival is also an opportunity to introduce Vietnamese culture and history to Japanese friends, helping build bridges of understanding between the two communities.

Other annual events

  • Mid-Autumn Festival (Tết Trung Thu) — “Celebrating Mid-Autumn with Our Children” — a program for Vietnamese families, hosted in cities including Hikone and Nagoya.
  • Connection Summer Camp — a community summer camp held in Chiba (2022) and continued in 2023, bringing generations together to share life skills.
  • Year-End Gathering (Tết Tất Niên) — a year-end community event that reviews VAJ's activities and celebrates Lunar New Year in the Vietnamese tradition.
  • Sports exchange & futsal — a community futsal tournament held in 2022 alongside other sports exchange events.
  • Symposium on the 120th Anniversary of the Đông Du Movement (November 2025) — an academic and cultural event connecting Vietnamese and Japanese history.

Organizational network

Cultural events are coordinated by the Kanto Headquarters (Tokyo), the Kansai Chapter (Osaka), and the Tokai Chapter (in preparation). Local groups work together so that Vietnamese communities across different regions can take part.
